2023/24 Winter Snow Report
Morzine
Early in the season, significant snowfall arrived, which raised expectations for a strong winter. There was abundant snowfall in January, revitalising the slopes and delivering quality powder days.
Through March, skiing was steady, with a mix of fresh snow and warmer days leading to spring-like conditions in the afternoons. Overall, Morzine saw its deepest snowpack of around 508 cm in early April 2024, though these conditions varied significantly across elevations due to warmer weather impacting lower altitudes more heavily than higher ones in nearby areas like Avoriaz, which held onto better snow depth later in the season.
Avoriaz
Avoriaz experienced a varied snow record, with cumulative snowfall reaching approximately 680 cm over the season, and peak snow depths of around 230 cm at higher elevations. The season featured consistent snowfall, especially in early January and February, contributing significantly to this depth, and extending quality conditions for skiers well into April. This high-altitude resort benefits from a location that frequently captures snow, resulting in reliable coverage on most runs until the closing date in late April, even in relatively warmer late-season conditions.
And the Long range forecast?
We aren't expects at reading long range weather models, so we asked Chat GPT what we can expect for the 2024-25 ski season. Here's what AI makes of the long range forecast after scouring the web for all the best information...
The long-range forecast for the 2024-2025 winter season in Morzine and Avoriaz is encouraging for skiers, with expected steady snowfall driven by a mix of climate factors. Key influences include La Niña, which generally brings colder and wetter conditions to regions across Europe, particularly in high-altitude Alpine areas like Avoriaz and Morzine. Though La Niña's impact can vary, it is likely to provide increased snowfalls and more consistent snow cover in the Alps.
Experts predict that this season will be snowier than usual for these resorts, especially during January and February, which typically see the heaviest snowfall. The overall outlook suggests both natural snow and artificial snow coverage should keep the slopes in great condition through March, supporting a robust season for winter sports enthusiasts
The upcoming winter is shaping up to be favourable for extended skiing, making Morzine and Avoriaz excellent destinations for a snow-filled ski season.
Of course, even the biggest meteorology and weather agencies can't predict with absolute certainty, but there has been encouraging heavy snowfall in late September that we are in for a good 2024/25 winter season.
